In the 2017 match, we are offering 16 PGY-1 categorical positions; 14 Anesthesiology and 2 Combined Anesthesiology-Internal Medicine slots.
Our department has an excellent track record of graduating superior residents, and we make every effort to keep up the traditional high standards of our program by looking for applicants who display the following attributes and/or qualifications:
- Solid academic achievement as demonstrated by USMLE performance
- Strong clinical performance as demonstrated by letters of recommendation and the medical school Dean's Letter (MSPE)
- Adequate interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated by the interview process
Applicants must be a graduate of a LCME/AOA approved medical school, or possess ECFMG certification. Each applicant will be required to submit through ERAS the following materials:
- Current copy of the curriculum vitae (CV)
- Three current letters of recommendation
- USMLE results
- Personal statement (one page is sufficient)
- Medical school transcripts
- Medical school Dean's Letter
- Enthusiasm for practicing medicine!
Applications are carefully evaluated by the Program Directors; those who are chosen for an interview will be contacted by the Residency Coordinator by e-mail to schedule an interview date. The interviews will take place from October through January. As slots fill up rapidly, applicants are encouraged to complete their applications as soon as possible.
The process begins with an optional casual dinner the night before with residents at a local restaurant, giving the applicant an excellent opportunity to meet and chat with current residents. The day of the interview typically begins with a group meeting with the Program Director, who will give a short presentation about the particulars of the program, including locations, hours, rotations, and so forth. The Chair will also briefly address the group and answer questions. A continental breakfast will be served. Applicants will interview with various members of the selection committee. All interviews are one-on-one and take about 10 minutes each. When the interviews are finished, applicants are shown around the campus by the Chief Residents. Lunch is then provided, providing the applicant with another opportunity to interact with current residents, students, staff, and others.
New for 2015 was an option for a web-based interview process. Applicants were able to interview remotely, thus saving them the cost of travel and time lost from other endeavors. This was well-received, and we plan to continue to offer the option in the future.
Applications to the anesthesiology program for the March 2018 match will be accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application deadline is Friday, October 6, 2017.
